What is FUE Hair Transplantation?
FUE Hair Transplantation is the most advanced hair transplantation method together with DHI. After the technique first appeared in 1988, it has gradually replaced FUT. The main advantage of FUE over FUT was the absence of post-plant scarring and therefore quickly gained popularity.
Which Method Was Used Before FUE?
Before FUE, the main method of hair transplantation was follicular unit transplantation (FUT or FUSS). In the FUT method, surgeons have to make an incision around the head. The incision is made around the occipital part of the scalp from one ear to the other. After taking this cut strip of skin, the surgeon stitches the ends of the skin together. This hair transplant method is now quite old and most surgeons have abandoned this method.
FUE Hair Transplantation Stages
During FUE hair transplantation, multiple personnel work simultaneously throughout the operation to speed up the process.
- Hair follicles from the donor area are separated from the tissue by means of a micromotor without damaging the hair follicle. These roots that come out of their places are then collected by the operator.
- To prepare the grafts for transplantation, another specialist first takes the collected hair follicles and strings them on a surgical gauze strip.
Hair follicles cannot survive for long outside our body. Therefore, after the grafts are cleaned, they are placed in a special serum solution.
- The serum provides protection of hair follicles from environmental effects, especially dehydration (drying).
- Hair roots can stay in this serum solution for about 8-10 hours outside the body.
- However, hair transplant operations usually take less than 8 hours.
Anesthesia Procedure
During the operation, specialists administer anesthesia to you at least twice. You will receive the first anesthesia application just before the hair follicles are removed.
- The doctor applies anesthesia as if drawing a line around the back of the head.
- The area where anesthesia is applied starts from the neck and extends to the back of the ears.
- The line ends just below your crown area and this area has the strongest hair follicles.
The operation is felt at the time of application of anesthesia. You will not feel anything when the anesthesia of the donor site is completed, as patients usually begin to feel numb from the area that received the first anaesthetic.
- Local anesthetics usually have an effect that lasts for about 3-6 hours.
After the hair follicles are removed and just before opening the channels, you will receive your second anesthesia. This time, anesthesia is applied to the area to be transplanted. This time, the doctor applies anesthesia as if drawing a line around the area to be transplanted.
Some patients prefer the graft to be transplanted from the lower part of the beard or the chest area. In this case, the same procedure applies to these regions.
How Can We Determine Where and How Much Grafts Will Be Planted?
When the hair follicles are separated, examined and cleaned, the doctor prepares to open a canal. Channels are tiny holes that doctors make with microblades.
- The doctor evaluates the natural growth pattern of the hair and draws a path accordingly.
- Our hair is inclined to grow at a certain angle. Therefore, they do not exit at a 90 degree angle.
- This is why experts look at natural angles and make incisions to simulate these angles.
- The specialist who aligns the grafts also counts how many grafts are taken from the patient.
- The doctor plans the number of channels according to the number of grafts available.
- Thus, the doctor determines where to open more channels and how many grafts each channel will receive.
- Doctors open channels to match the number of grafts
However, trading for a long time can be uncomfortable. Therefore, the teams take a small break to give the patient some time after opening the channels.
Sapphire FUE Hair Transplant
Thanks to the developing technology, knives can be produced from sapphire mineral.
Sapphire is a precious stone. What makes Sapphire FUE hair transplant special is the hardness of the material. Metal tools start to wear after a certain channel opening and lose their sharpness. This is because metals can bend. Minerals such as sapphire, on the other hand, do not bend or lose their sharpness. With sapphire hair transplantation, doctors can open channels more precisely.
Sowing Process
Now that both grafts and canals are ready, the transplantation process can begin. After the break after the canal is opened, each of the specialists takes a graft collection and starts the transplantation process. Grafts that are judged to be healthier are usually placed in the front row of the canals.
Experts remove each graft with a very small tool similar to tweezers. Usually, two or more specialists transplant hair follicles at the same time to save time. This stage takes most of the operation time, because each graft is sensitive and care must be taken during transplantation.
Sometimes, at this stage, the anesthetics can expire. If you start to feel something, you should inform the team. If you did not receive much anesthesia during the operation, you will be given more anesthesia.
About the FUT Method
FUT method started to be used ten years before FUE and therefore FUE and DHI methods are more advanced than FUT. Years of development in medicine and medical equipment have provided a different approach to hair transplantation.
FUE and FUT methods have a very similar sowing phase (DHI is slightly different and is the latest method). Channels are opened for October. Then the rest of the team starts planting with a tool like tweezers.
What's Different in FUE Hair Transplant?
The main difference between the two is how they approach graft taking. The doctor cuts a strip and uses it to create a graft. However, in FUE and DHI surgeries, doctors do not open any incisions.
An electrical device called a micromotor is used in FUE and DHI hair transplant operators. These devices contain a high torque motor and have a round tip called a punch. This punch makes small holes around the hair follicles that we will use as grafts.
The size of the punch varies according to the hair follicle type of the patient. The radius of the punch is usually between 6mm and 9mm. There are larger punches, but they are not used often.
If the patient's hair is very curly, a larger punch may be required. Because curly hair roots usually tend to be curly like the structure of the hair. Using a small punch on such hair may cause damage to the hair root.
Root Removal Process in FUE Hair Transplant
After the expert using the micromotor covers a certain area, another expert steps in and starts the reception. The micromotor makes very small holes, but that's all. Hair follicles also need to be removed one by one. The extraction specialist uses the same tweezers-like tool to remove the grafts. Again, another specialist takes these grafts and cleans them with the help of a spray. After the hair follicles are cleaned, the operator sorts and counts them as in FUT.
In the FUT method, patients leave a large permanent scar on the back of their head. This scar is usually not seen unless the patients have short hair. However, for this reason, we recommend FUE and DHI methods instead of FUT method to our patients.
There is no need to make any incisions in the FUE method. The micromotor applies the graft removal to the scalp skin with minimal damage. Thanks to this regional device, patients do not get permanent scars. Micromotor graft removal scars are almost invisible to the naked eye, even if the hair is cut short.
In the past, clinics used FUE graft retrieval with a handheld mechanical device. Today we do this with a micromotor. Although handheld devices were popular in the 90s, we have micro motors produced with newly developed technology.
Today, you can have both DHI and FUE hair transplantation in Turkey at affordable prices. In addition, you can get detailed information about both procedures and fees by visiting our website and consulting our experts.
Fue Hair Transplant Results
Both hair transplantation methods offer reliable results. In fact, it is quite rare to apply the FUT method for hair transplantation today. FUE and DHI methods do not cause this scar in FUT, so these methods are much more popular at the moment.
In FUE and DHI, we evenly extract hair follicles from all over the donor area. In this way, it does not cause an irregular appearance after taking more grafts from a certain area and after the operation. However, in the FUT method, the skin bearing the hair was removed. Today, this method is not as efficient as other methods.
There is no permanent scar in patients in FUE and DHI. This is a big advantage of these methods. Our experts will assist you with any of these methods when you consult with us.
What to Do After Sowing?
After FUE hair transplantation is completed, the team starts to bandage your head. The transplanted area is not bandaged. Because at this point, the transplanted grafts are too sensitive to withstand any physical contact. Therefore, you must be very careful not to hit your head anywhere.
The Risks and Side Effects of Fue Hair Transplant
Like any surgical intervention, hair transplant surgery has some risks and possible side effects. Some patients do not notice most side effects. In addition, some will have mild side effects. It all depends on the service provided by the clinic and the efforts of the patient. Some of the common side effects are:
- Scabbing around the planting area
- Itchy scalp
- Edema of the hair follicle (folliculitis)
- Temporary loss of sensation around the treated areas
- Inflammation
As we offer our patients first-class service and medical quality, we keep the risk of side effects to a minimum. Please contact our experts for more information about the possible side effects and risks of your condition.
Sleep Instructions
After the bandage, we will give you instructions on how to spend your first few days. For the first seven days after the operation, you must lie on your back. This helps prevent unwanted friction while you sleep. We can recommend using neck pillows to keep your back stable. The neck pillow will allow you to sleep on your back.
Your First Morning After FUE
When you wake up the next morning, you will need to take the medications we will give you after the operation. Of course, you will receive information on how to use them along with the drugs.
Once your transaction is complete, we will give you an interview date for checking. When you come to our hospital, we will remove your bandages, clean your head and give you a headband. Inflammation may occur after surgery. This is an effect of the operation and the drug. Your body will accumulate fluid in response to injury and foreign matter (anesthesia).
Edema and Dealing With It
The headband helps prevent the naturally occurring edema from moving downwards due to gravity after the operation. This causes an unpleasant appearance and some discomfort. Therefore, listen to your doctor's instructions and keep the headband on for the specified time.
In addition, not maintaining an upright posture after the operation may also lead to the same result. If you are used to bending your neck and looking down, you can put yourself at risk. To avoid such complications, we advise patients to keep their posture as upright as possible. The inflammation heals in about 3-7 days, depending on how the patient's body reacts.
FUE Hair Transplant Cost
So far, we have only talked about the technical aspects of hair transplant operations. Now Let's talk a little bit about the cost of hair transplant procedures in Turkey.
The cost of hair transplantation in Europe or America is between 4000 and 14000 Euros. Most people cannot fulfill their desire to have more attractive hair due to these exaggerated hair transplant prices, but you can get a hair transplant in Turkey at much more affordable prices.
FUE Hair Transplantation in Turkey
The truth is that Turkey is becoming more and more popular among international patients. Service quality and price are the main reasons for this increase in popularity. Turkish doctors have the potential to provide hair transplant services in more modern hospitals with the same quality as clinics in developed countries .
Frequently Asked Questions – FUE Hair Transplant
Will a single operation be enough for me?
Depends on the patient. If you are young and it is possible to lose more hair in the future, you may need a second operation after a few years. At this point, it would be good for you to contact our clinic once again.
Most of my hair fell out after the operation; It has been 2 weeks. Why is it happening?
Do not be afraid. Hair follicles sense damage to the surrounding tissue. This is the body's natural response to the scar on the hair follicles. This event is called shock loss.
How long will it take for my hair to grow back?
It depends on the patient's health. Usually, however, patients can see the expected result or something close to the expected result after a year. Generally, all hair follicles are activated in about 12-18 months. For some patients, this may take up to 24 months.
